Last week, we had the opportunity to attend the WS24 in Málaga, Spain, hosted by IFES. Among the various workshops and seminars, one particular session stood out: a workshop on education where young professionals discussed a critical issue—the lack of onboarding in the events and exhibitions sector. This gap prevents many young individuals from considering this industry as a viable career path post-university.

The Importance of onboarding in the events sector

The events and exhibitions sector, including project management of events and stands, offers a dynamic and rewarding career. However, many young professionals feel disconnected from this industry due to insufficient onboarding processes. Onboarding is crucial as it helps new entrants understand the industry’s nuances, from planning and logistics to creative design and client management.

Challenges faced by young professionals

During the workshop, several key points were highlighted by the attendees:

  1. Lack of Awareness: Many university graduates are unaware of the career opportunities available in the events and exhibitions sector.
  2. Limited Training Programs: There are few structured onboarding programs tailored to young professionals in this field.
  3. Networking Barriers: Young professionals often find it challenging to break into established networks within the industry.

The role of the industry

The consensus was clear: organizations like IFES and the sector as a whole need to take proactive steps to attract and retain young talent. Here are some recommendations:

  1. Promote Career Opportunities: Increase visibility of career paths in event management and stand construction through university partnerships and career fairs.
  2. Develop Structured Onboarding Programs: Create comprehensive training programs that cover the essential skills and knowledge needed in the industry.
  3. Foster Mentorship: Establish mentorship programs that connect young professionals with industry veterans.
  4. Leverage Social Media: Use social media platforms to showcase the exciting and diverse opportunities within the sector.
